Organization Overview
"Some men see things the way they are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?" - Robert F. Kennedy paraphrasing George Bernard Shaw
Robert F. Kennedy believed so strongly in the possibility of ending injustice and changing the world that he made it a cornerstone of his 1968 Presidential campaign. The Robert F. Kennedy Memorial carries on this legacy of hope and change through programs aimed at tackling the toughest problems we face as a global society.
Mission Statement:
Since its inception in 1968, The Robert F. Kennedy Memorial has aimed to fulfill the legacy of Robert Kennedy through promoting the full spectrum of human rights within the United States and throughout the world. In order to reflect the global nature of RFK's work, the Memorial established the annual Human Rights Award in 1984 to honor individuals who, at great risk, stand up to oppression in the nonviolent pursuit of social justice. Led by the Kennedy family, a staff of expert human rights activists and a strong network of volunteers, the Memorial develops and implements projects which enhance and complement the social change agendas of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award Laureates and Social Justice Fellows. Today the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit charitable organization that works to realize his dream of a peaceful and just world through domestic and international programs that help the disadvantaged and oppressed, build our next generation of leaders, and tackle the toughest problems facing our society.
Awards:
The Robert F. Kennedy Memorial admires and celebrates the sensitivity and courage of writers, journalists and social rights activists who have dedicated their talents and lives to exposing and eliminating social injustices. To honor the accomplishments and dedication of these people, the Memorial has created the annual Book, Journalism and Human Rights Award Programs. Recipients of these awards receive international recognition and prizes for their inspiring work. Furthermore, Human Rights Award recipients establish a partnership with the Center for Human Rights to assist in their social justice endeavors.
Speak Truth to Power (STTP):
Speak Truth to Power (STTP) is a program dedicated to promoting awareness of human rights. Through the combined power of arts and education, STTP seeks to proactively engage the general public, bringing human rights activists and their work into contact with ever-increasing audiences.
Over the past three years, SPEAK TRUTH has grown from Kerry Kennedy's book to the moving and inspirational play by Chilean writer Ariel Dorfman, the stirring photographic exhibition by Pulitzer Prize-winner Eddie Adams, a PBS documentary film, and an education packet.
