Fang Lizhi (China, 1989)

Prominent astrophysicist and professor, Fang Lizhi openly advocated democracy and the freedom of education in China. Blamed for the student rebellion at Tiananmen Square, Lizhi left China in 1990. He continues his activism in the United States.

Due to political exile, health problems or the pursuit of personal endeavors, a number of Laureates are no longer partnered with the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights.
