Overview of the Journeys for Justice Program:

Journeys for Justice are an innovative approach to bringing international attention to the critical issues RFK Human Rights Award Laureates champion to resolve. The program provides human rights supporters the unique opportunity to join high- profile delegations led by the Kennedy family. Delegation members meet with the Laureates and the beneficiaries of their efforts, and speak with people affected by gross human rights violations. Additionally, members meet with the leaders of the countries visited, prominent local and national governmental officials and other stakeholders.

Having acquired an intimate perspective on some of todayís most provocative social injustices, Delegation members utilize their experience to advocate on behalf of the Laureates. Members broaden American and international public's interest through press conferences, and assist in fundraising to initiate social change projects.

Delegation to Guatemala
The RFK Memorial Center for Human Rights (CHR) organized a Journeys for Justice delegation to Guatemala, led by Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, from October 31-November 6, 2003, and hosted by our 1990 RFK Human Rights Laureate Amilcar Méndez Urizar. Other delegates included the Honorable Christine Stewart (Canada’s former Minister of Environment and Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs in Latin America and Africa); Dr. Rafael Espada (Guatemalan cardiovascular surgeon and humanitarian); Bianca Jagger (internationally renown human rights activist); Melanne Verveer (Hillary Clinton’s former Chief of Staff and currently Chair of Vital Voices); and Kate Townsend (Kathleen's daughter and a student at Brown University). Christine and Rafael had previously traveled to Brazil in May 2003 on the CHR delegation.
